Leuren Moret is an American independent scientist and international
expert on radiation and public health issues.
She has devoted her life to awakening the public to the destructive
consequences of depleted uranium munitions that are used by the US
military. She has made relentless efforts to stop the US from
continuing to pollute the environment.
Q. The US is using DU weapons in violation of international
treaties. Why is not the international community forcing the US to put
an end to the use or production of such weaponry?
A. I've asked that question many times myself.
With the demonstrated total and complete failure of international
judicial remedies - by the International Criminal Court and the world
court - to enforce the 1925 Geneva poison gas protocol, the Geneva and
Hague conventions, international agreements and other treaties, and
the failure of depleted uranium weapons to meet the standards (in four
out of four categories) of legality under international law, it is
clear that the international judicial system is morally and
procedurally bankrupt. In other words, international laws and treaties
are meaningless and/or selectively enforced. Just like the US nuclear
weapons labs where I have worked, they selectively enforce the rules
only when they want to 'get someone', in other words, they unfairly
target and enforce laws that may be on the books, but are ignored.

DIVINE STRAKE BACK IN NEVADA
The fight is on, again. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., a member of the
Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, says the Defense Threat
Reduction Agency told him the Divine Strake test explosion of 700 tons
of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil will take place at the Nevada Test
Site.
After public outcry and legal machinations, the test, which was to have
taken place last summer at the NTS, was rerouted first to a gravel
quarry in Indiana, then to White Sands, N.M. and now it's back in
southern Nevada.
Take off the gloves, it's time to go bare knuckles against this project
and flush it once and for all.
This test is likely to kick up settled radioactivity from the desert
floor and spew it into the atmosphere, only to be dumped at the will
of the jet stream who knows where.

TEDD WEYMAN: THE NUCLEAR WAR ON IRAQ
Deputy Director of the Uranium Medical Research Centre, working
with Dr. Asaf Durakovic, Tedd Weyman organized and led field
studies in Afghanistan and Iraq to measure and analyze uranium
contamination of radiotoxic and chemotoxic heavy metals
('depleted uranium,' etc.) from battlefield weapons. The use of
uranium in non fissile-penetrating weapons and bunker busters
are effectively nuclear weapons, Weyman reports. It is known
world wide, he says, that DU weapons have long-term implications
that, right now corporations and governments are hiding. But
Weyman cautions, "If you don’t have a moral objection [to using
DU on another nation], you might have a pragmatic objection
which might be the liabilities that a nation faces for
permanently contaminating another nation’s environment...Uranium
contamination in Iraq will last for millions of years. So the
liabilities are very significant when you have every nation that
was on the receiving end and every soldier on the sending end
contaminated." Weyman spoke in Rochester, June 26, 2005 at an
event hosted by a coalition of Rochester peace groups.
